YOU CAN DO IT! PROGRAM You Can Do It !! Education is a school home community approach to helping young people achieve to the best of their ability and experience positive social emotional well being. Dr Michael Bernard Ph.D has researched extensively in this area and developed the program that Ross Hill Public School is implementing across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school teaches the 5 social—emotional capabilities that lead to success. Confidence - means knowing that you will likely be successful at many things you study. It means not being afraid to make mistakes or to try something new. A person who demonstrates confidence is able to: « Accept themselves « Take risks « Be independent Persistence - means trying hard and not giving up when school work feels like it’s too difficult or boring. A person who demonstrates persistence is able to: « Say I can do it! « Give effort « Work tough Organisation - means setting a goal to do your best in your schoolwork, planning your time so you are not rushed, having all your supplies ready, keeping track of assignment due dates. A person who demonstrates organization is able to: « Set goals « Plan their time Getting Along - means working well with teachers and classmates, solving problems without getting too angry, and following the rules of the classroom. A person who is able to get along with others is able to: « Be tolerant of others « Think first—before reacting badly « Play by the rules « Be socially responsible Emotional Resilience - means knowing how to stop yourself from getting extremely angry, down or worried when something bad happens. A resilient person is able to: « Stop themselves from getting angry if someone treats them unfairly « Stop themselves from getting down if they do not understand something, are teased or get a bad report « Stop themselves from getting extremely worried if they have an important test or activity to do « Are able to say “no” if someone is putting pressure on them to do the wrong thing
Explicit Teaching of Positive Self Talk In this program, five curriculum units have been developed that explicitly teach the five social emotional capabilities targeted in this program. They are: Unit 1 Confidence Unit 4 Getting Along Unit 2 Persistence Unit 5 Emotional Resilience Unit 3 Organisation We encourage all our parents to learn more about this program, to use it at home with their children and to come along to our Parent Workshops held at the school.
